President Dr Mohamed Muizzu stated last night that those who promoted 'fun without fear' must bear responsibility for the situation in society at present.
The President stated this in his address last night at the ceremony held at Hulhumale' Synthetic Track to mark the 92nd anniversary of Maldives Police Service.
President Muizzu addressed the ongoing case of the woman discovered fallen from a building last Friday, describing it as a tragic incident.
The case concerns the fall of Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed from a building after a night spent with a group of youth. Yumnu, and Raudh Ahmed Zilal, who was with her at the time of the incident, have been said to be in a state of intoxication on the night.
The President placed the blame for the incident on the opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), who, over a decade ago, used the slogan in their entertainment manifesto for the 2013 presidential election.
"When we think about this incident, I believe, as will all who support justice, that the responsibility for this must be taken by those who, years ago, promoted the idea of having fun without fear," the President said last night.
"They implied that the boundaries and limits in our holy Islam are not too important, and encouraged youth to have fun and act as they liked. We must open our eyes to the fact that today they are misusing this youth for political reasons," he alleged.
The President said that the youth had gone down this path through being caught in a political tide, where Islamic norms were ignored, and youth were encouraged to choose a wrong path. He said that based on this, the public must be able to tell the difference between honesty and deception.
"Maldivian citizens should not get involved in this where victimized youth are being used for political gain," he said.
The President then stated that he did not believe that Maldives Police Service would lie to the public. He said that there is no gain for Police in doing so.
He accused those alleging Police cover ups as persons who want to ruin the reputation of the Police service and create discord amongst the public.
"We must remain patient and allow Police to fulfill their duties."
