The Housing Ministry has decided to assume responsibility of allocating 200 housing units in Gdh. Thinadhoo, citing the city council’s failure to follow the ministry's directives.
In a statement on Thursday, the ministry said the policies and criteria on allocating housing units under government projects have always been endorsed and approved by the Ministry. However, the city council announced on January 29 the council announced the allocation of flats without getting the ministry's approval.
This was followed by the ministry instructing the council to cancel the announcement on January 30. The Housing Ministry asked the council to send the allocation policies and criteria for endorsement. However, the council had not complied with the directives, it was also revealed.
As such, the ministry said it would not recognise any work carried out under the un-endorsed announcement by the council, and said it would made the necessary criteria to determine the beneficiaries of the housing units fairly, within the government's housing policies, and try to allocate the units as soon as possible.
