Broadcasting Commission of Maldives (Broadcom) has warned that legal action will be taken against broadcasters who fail to comply with regulations when covering public demonstrations.
In a statement issued today, the commission said it has laid out specific procedures to be followed when broadcasting rallies and protests, in line with Broadcasting Code of Practice.
Broadcom reminded media outlets that the code must be upheld at all times and urged compliance with the Broadcasting Act.
“The commission will take action against broadcasters who violate rules and regulations within the legal framework,” the statement read.
This statement follows a protest in Male' last night, where crowds gathered to demand justice for a 21-year-old woman who fell from the ninth floor of H. Fentoniya onto the adjacent rooftop of a warehouse in the early hours of Friday.
The case has drawn public criticism over the pace and handling of the police investigation.
The protest, led largely by youth, took place near the Henveiru police station and called for those involved in the incident to be held accountable.
