A request has been submitted to the Parliament’s Committee on National Security Services (241 Committee) to launch an inquiry into the case of a 21-year-old woman who fell from the ninth floor of a building in Male'.
The incident occurred during the early hours of Friday morning, with the woman later found injured on the roof of an adjacent warehouse in Henveiru.
She is currently receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at IGMH, although no official details about her injuries have been disclosed.
Widespread public concern has since emerged, with many expressing dissatisfaction over how police is conducting the investigation.
These include the fact that the young man last seen with the woman testing positive for drugs but no further action was taken except to ban him from leaving Maldives. In addition, the others in the case were not tested for drugs and their identities were not disclosed.
These concerns have led to mounting allegations of unequal treatment and lack of transparency, fueling protests and calls for justice.
Hithadhoo Central MP Ahmed Azaan submitted a request to the 241 Committee, urging Parliament to investigate the actions taken by the police. In his letter to Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Azaan stated that the public believes police are treating this case differently from similar past incidents, and stressed the need for law enforcement to act responsibly and free from influence.
Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem has called on Parliament to summon Homeland Minister Ali Ihusaan to be questioned over the alleged selective disclosure of information by the police.
He has also requested to summon Social and Family Development Minister Aishath Shiham for questioning over the absence of forensic analysis in the case, especially concerning in light of allegations of sexual assault.
Protests erupted outside the Henveiru Police Station last night, with demonstrators demanding accountability, justice, and equal treatment under the law.
