President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the chances of bringing PayPal to the Maldives are high, raising hopes among freelancers and content creators who have long pushed for access to global payment platforms.

Speaking on Dheno’s "Spot On" podcast, President Muizzu said significant progress had been made in introducing PayPal to the country.

“It’s very hopeful. So let’s hope,” he said, while acknowledging that no specific timeline could yet be given.

Facilitating the use of PayPal and similar platforms was one of President Muizzu’s presidential pledges.

The government submitted a proposal to PayPal in late August last year, and Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed held a virtual meeting with the company’s Global Marketing President on 22 August to address existing barriers.

Minister Saeed also sought the support of US officials during a visit to Washington to advance the process. He said the discussions helped PayPal gain a clearer understanding of the Maldivian market.

In March last year, Bank of Maldives launched new foreign money transfer services and digital wallets aimed at supporting online payments, including through PayPal.
