Three naval frigates of China arrived in the Maldives on Sunday.

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) stated that senior officers and soldiers of the Maldivian army held a special ceremony at Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) in capital Male to warmly welcome the crews of the three warships, which are on a friendly visit to the archipelago.

The officers of the frigates will hold special training sessions with MNDF soldiers before the warships depart coming Thursday. MNDF added that they will also carry out joint sports activities in order to strengthen friendly relations between the militaries of China and the Maldives.

Furthermore, officers of the Chinese Navy are to visit various branches and institutions of MNDF and the army training centre at MNDF’s military base in Girifushi.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and China have been on the rise with the island nation receiving great aid from the Asian superpower to finance its ongoing development projects. The most notable project currently underway is the development of the landmark China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, connecting Male with airport island Hulhule.
