Police advise caution as road accidents increase

In a post on social media today, Police said that a record number of road accidents have occurred between January and the end of March, with the highest numbers recorded in February.

Police have advised motorists to practice caution as the rate of road accidents have seen an increase in recent months.

In a post on social media today, Police said that a record number of road accidents have occurred between January and the end of March, with the highest numbers recorded in February.

An accident on February 1 resulted in one fatality. This accident occurred on the Sinamale' Bridge Highway, when the motorist crashed into a traffic cone on the lane travelling from Hulhumale' to Male'.

The first three months of the year saw 561 accidents occurring in the Male' area alone. Police statistics show that 216 of these were within the month of February, which is significantly higher than the average.

February last year recorded 267 accidents across the Maldives.

By the end of March this year, 49 accidents occurred at Velana International Airport, with 19 recorded in January, 12 in February and 18 in March.

454 accidents occurred on the bridges connecting Hulhumale' Phases 1 and 2.
