President Abdulla Yameen vowed that next year’s state budget will be “promising” for civil service as he proclaimed that the government is in the midst of improving the sector’s remuneration framework and hiking allowances for civil servants.
In his address at the opening ceremony of his campaign hub for the Presidential Elections 2018, President Yameen acknowledged that civil service is one of the most neglected sectors in the Maldives. However, he assured that the recently founded National Pay Commission, managed under Minister of Finance and Treasury Ahmed Munawar, has already commenced work to revise civil servants’ salaries and increase their allowances and bonuses.
President Yameen further noted that civil servants had once been forced to work without pay during a previous government, indirectly referring to the administration of former President Mohamed Nasheed. He declared that the current government ensures that all employees of the civil service receive their salaries in a timely manner.
He further announced that the government has decided to allocate USD 20 million in the state budget to solve the challenges currently facing the fisheries sector.
