Operating bonded warehouses out of residential homes has been banned in the Maldives.

Home Minister Ali Ihusan addressed allegations of goods being damaged at a bonded warehouse, stating on X that the incident occurred in a warehouse set up within a residential home.

In connection to the matter, he said that he does not believe operating bonded warehouses in private homes is the best in terms of safety and control.

The minister continued to say that the government has decided to allow operation of bonded warehouses only in areas under full control of customs, and that the rule is now being enforced.

Police and customs are also investigating a case of a bonded warehouse being abandoned without notifying customs, and another business being operated out of the location.

Ihusan said customs had confirmed the incident and has issued an order for duty to be paid for goods recorded to be stored in the warehouse.
