Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived in the Maldives Tuesday afternoon to attend the Independence Day celebrations.

PM Nawaz Sharif and his wife Kalsoom Nawaz Sharif were warmly received at Velana International Airport (VIA) by President Abdulla Yameen and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim.

The prime minister is to visit capital Male on Tuesday evening where an official reception will be held in the President’s Office.

The President’s Office had earlier announced that PM Nawaz and President Yameen will sign some agreements to strengthen relations between the two South Asian allies during the prime minister’s visit.

PM Nawaz will spend three days in the Maldives on this visit to take part in the Independence Day celebrations.

The Pakistani prime minister had accepted the president’s invitation the last two years as well. However, he was not able to visit the Maldives in 2015 due to flooding in Pakistan, and then again in 2016 due to his heart surgery. This year is the third invitation extended to PM Nawaz to attend the Maldives’ Independence Day function.

According to the President’s Office, the celebrations and activities of this year’s Independence Day will take place July 26 at 9:00 p.m. at the National Football Stadium in capital Male. The official reception, hosted by President Yameen and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim, is to be held the following night at Dharubaaruge convention centre.
