Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has said that they have detained 47 individuals found begging on the streets and in drug addiction, and have transferred them to treatment facilities.

Under this operation commenced on October 22, the Ministry oversees identifying homeless persons in drug addiction and transfers them to one of the treatment facilities for rehabilitation.
Chairperson of National Drug Agency (NDA) Lubna Mohamed Zahir said that this operation will be conducted continuously, without having set an end date.
Under this operation, drug addicts found begging on streets, involved in theft and robbery, loitering and sleeping in mosques will be detained and taken to treatment facilities where they will undergo rehabilitation, Lubna said.
She said that while NDA works on further strengthening their treatment systems, they will ensure to include relapse prevention, reintegration, aftercare and drug prevention efforts.
NDA presently offers both residential and non-residential treatment.
Residential treatment is provided at the Therapeutic Community Rehabilitation Centre, Residential Detox, and Semi-residential facility and remand centre in Kaafu atoll Himmafushi. There are also Detox Facilities in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Thinadhoo and Fuvahmulah.
The total bed capacity in treatment facilities across the country is currently 350 beds.
