Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Khaleel has been appointed as Deputy President of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
The appointment was made at today's meeting of PPM's senate, which has been held after a long interval.
An official of ruling People's National Congress (PNC), with which PPM works as a coalition partner, said that the appointment was made unanimously by those present.
Additionally, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital CEO Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq was appointed as the party's Secretary General.
The senate meeting was held while rumours were circulating on social media that PPM was going to be dissolved. The official dismissed these claims, and stated that no such thing has been discussed.
At present, PPM's Deputy Presidents are Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam and Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon.
Many in PPM's leadership moved to PNC after the new administration came into office.
