India's Minister of External Affairs Dr Subramanyam Jaishankar is scheduled to make an official visit to the Maldives in August, an Indian newspaper reports.

India's WION News reports that Jaishankar is scheduled to travel to Maldives on August 9 on a two to three day visit. It was reported that the Minister would hold meetings with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer during this trip.

However, no official mention of this trip has been made so far by either the Maldivian or Indian government.

Jaishankar's visit will become the first official trip from a senior State Official of India to Maldives after President Muizzu assumed office.

Earlier this year, relations between Maldives and India became strained following disrespectful remarks made on social media by three deputy ministers against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These three ministers remain on suspension, but India initiated a large scale movement to boycott Maldives, leading to low tourist arrivals from India during the year.

Relations between the countries have improved since, with India having extended assistance on various fronts to the Maldives. Foreign Minister Zameer has also recently made an official visit to India, prior to which President Muizzu attended the oath taking ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during which the two leaders discussed improving bilateral relations.

According to President Muizzu's pledge to remove foreign military presence from Maldives, the Indian troops stationed in the Maldives have since been replaced with Indian civilian experts, with the Dornier flight and helicopters gifted from India having been brought back into service this week.
