Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal has met with the Minister of Tourism of India Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat today and discussed collaborative tourism promotion between the countries.
After today's meeting, Minister Faisal shared a post on social media X stating that their discussion had focused on enhancing tourism initiatives of both Maldives and India, as well as looking into how to promote tourism in a manner beneficial to both countries.
After having held tourism promotion discussions in the Maldives last week, Minister Faisal is currently visiting India where he inaugurated the Welcome India Roadshow aimed at increasing tourist arrivals from India.
The roadshow will be held in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.
Last year, India was at the top of the list of tourist arrivals to Maldives. However, this year India has gone down to sixth on the list. While over 200,000 tourists visited from India last year, with over a 100,000 within the first six months, the number so far this year remains at 57,000.
A major reason behind the decrease in tourist arrivals from India is diplomatic issues that arose between the countries. However, Maldives-India relations have now improved, with both countries working to maintain friendly ties.
