The Parliament has voted to advise President Mohamed Muizzu to appoint Finance Minister's Advisor Ahmed Munawwar as the new Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).
Out of 85 members present in parliament, 78 lawmakers participated in today's vote concerning Munawwar's appointment. Munawwar previously served as Finance Minister during former President Abdulla Yameen's administration. Seven members abstained from voting.
Presenting the Public Accounts Committee's review report, Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim noted that committee members had questioned Munawwar, verified the information, and awarded him a score of 94.43 percent, recommending the president to appoint Munawwar as MMA governor.
Qasim highlighted Munawwar's extensive experience in the financial sector, noting his previous roles within MMA and his tenure as Finance Minister.
"It is evident that no president has ever proposed a more suitable candidate for this position," Qasim stated.
The previous governor, Ali Hashim, appointed by the MDP government, was recently removed from office following a parliamentary recommendation.
