The managing director of Maldives Road Development Corporation (MRDC), Mohamed Nimal, resigned from his post late Wednesday.

He told Mihaaru that he made the decision to make more time for the campaign of the Presidential Elections 2018.

“I’ll be standing with President Yameen during the elections, that’s for certain,” said Nimal.

Nimal, who was appointed to MRDC last March 1, was also the campaign manager for ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) during the Local Council Elections held this year. However, his role in the upcoming presidential campaign yet remains unclear.

His first state position in President Abdulla Yameen’s administration was the managing director of utilities company Fenaka Corporation until September 26 last year. He was then shifted to position of deputy minister at the Ministry of Tourism on October 24, 2016 before he served as MRDC’s managing director.

Nimal was also notably the first choice for MRDC’s MD post during former President Mohamed Waheed’s government in 2012. However, he was dismissed from the post in July 2013 under accusations of abusing power and position. While incumbent President Yameen later appointed him to the post again, a private individual had filed a corruption issue against Nimal at the Anti-Corruption Commission last year.
