The Human Right’s Commission of Maldives (HRCM) on Monday met with jailed former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb in prison.
According to sources, the meeting was held at the detention centre in Kaafu atoll Dhoonidhoo island. Some members of the commission and their staff met with Adheeb to discuss his medical condition after his family filed a case at HRCM, claiming that authorities are denying to provide proper medical facilities to Adheeb.
However, HRCM as well as Maldives Police Service denied to comment on the matter.
Adheeb’s family claim that he has been diagnosed with an internal cyst, kidney stones and a dangerous eye disease “glaucoma”. Hence the family has requested authorities to grant permission for Adheeb to travel abroad for medical treatment. However, a decision has not yet been made.
The matter has also been sent to the United Nation. Moreover, Adheeb's family has sent a letter to the Parliamentary Group leader of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Ahmed Nihan, requesting a meeting to discuss the matter.
Meanwhile, former President Mohamed Nasheed has also requested the Home Ministry and Police to allow his delegates to meet with Adheeb to discuss the issue of his health.
Amnesty International has called on the Maldives to provide proper medical service to Adheeb according to the Constitution of the country as well as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Adheeb is sentenced to 33 years in jail over his involvement in the biggest corruption scandal in the country and orchestrating an assassination attempt on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
