A man has been arrested for biting and tearing a copy of the Quran kept in a mosque.
The arrested individual has been identified as MD Mannan, 36 years, from Bangladesh.
Criminal Court has today placed him in remand in custody for a period of 15 days. The court order said that he is being remanded as their is sufficient evidence against him to press charges.
It said that the police report indicates that Mannan had bitten and torn a copy of the Quran which was in a mosque.
It further said that as Mannan is a foreigner, there is a risk that he may attempt to flee the country, and so must be held in custody.
Earlier, a Maldivian man was arrested for spitting on a copy of the Quran.
