The driver of the speedboat has been arrested in connection with the death of the foreigner who passed away after being struck while fishing for groupers in the sea near Alif Dhaalu atoll Dhangethi this morning.
The person who died in the incident is a Bangladesh national who is a crew member of a vessel named "Twins," which belongs to Faafu atoll Feeali.
Police stated that the individual driving the speedboat was a Maldivian and has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Mihaaru news reports that the speedboat driver is a resident of Alifu Dhaalu atoll Maamigili.
Dhangethi Council president Muaviyath Rasheed told Mihaaru news that the incident occurred in an area frequented by people for grouper fishing. It is also a route frequently used by speedboats for travel to Male', he said.
A person speaking from the island said that the speedboat driver claimed they had been traveling during sunrise hours today and was unable to spot whether there were people in the sea due to the glare of the sun.
