President Abdulla Yameen has submitted a motion to the parliament to appoint the leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), Mohamed “Colonel” Nasheed, as the Ambassador of the Maldives to Thailand.

The president’s proposal is scheduled to be forwarded to the relevant parliamentary committee during the sitting on Monday when the parliament comes out of recess.

A former lawmaker, Nasheed was also formerly a member of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) before shifting sides to DRP. He took over the reins of DRP after the party’s previous leadership left for MDP.

DRP had joined forces with the ruling coalition in the last Local Council Elections.
