People's National Front (PNF) has held its Formation Meeting on Tuesday night. During the meeting, Yameen's son Zain Abdulla Yameen has been confirmed as the Interim President of PNF.
People's National Front (PNF), the new political party being formed on the initiative of former President Abdulla Yameen, has held its Formation Meeting on Tuesday night.
During the meeting, Yameen's son Zain Abdulla Yameen has been confirmed as the Interim President of PNF.
PNF's Formation Meeting was initially scheduled to be held at 21:00 hrs on Tuesday night at private Ghiyasudheen International School. However, the school pulled out of the agreement citing logistical difficulties and notified the party via email on Tuesday afternoon.
PNF, however, proceeded to hold the meeting at the school's hall tonight despite the emailed notification. Then arose confrontation between party members and supporters and the Police.
The confrontation occurred after Police closed the gates of the school, following a protection request sent from the school to the Police through the Ministry of Education, alleging that PNF was attempting to hold the gathering on the school's premises even without their permission.
One of the leading figures of PNF, former Minister Maleeh Jamal then announced that the meeting venue had been changed to the bridge platform area near the old Newport restaurant, and urged supporters to re-congregate at the new location.
PNF readied the new venue for the meeting themselves, even making arrangements for the provision of electricity there.
The Formation Meeting finally commenced past midnight, at around 00:20 hrs of what was, by then, Wednesday, April 10.
The party checked attendance and ensured that the minimum required number of 300 attendees, as stipulated by the Elections Commission, had been reached before they commenced the meeting. Attendance records indicate that 329 persons were in attendance.
Individuals were appointed to various leading positions within the party, including party founder Zain to the post of Interim President.
Twenty names were passed as members of the interim committee that will be in effect until a permanent party Senate is appointed. The first name on the list is of Yameen. The list also includes Zain, Maleeh and former Vice President Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed.
Additional matters decided upon in the meeting include the party's logo, official colour and the fundamental guidelines. PNF's official colour has been announced to be purple.
Yameen's wife Fathimath Ibrahim also participated in this meeting. Although the party had earlier said that Yameen would also be in attendance, he did not join the meeting tonight.
