The State has expended MVR 82 million in compensation payments during the last three months, exhausting the budget reserved for these payment by 80 percent. Each year, the compensation payments issued exceeds the budget allocated for it.
The State has expended MVR 82 million (USD 5,304,898.16) as compensation payments.
Financial statistics disclosed by the Ministry of Finance on 31st March reveals that the determined budget allocated for compensation payments has been exhausted by 80 percent during the last three months.
The compensation budget has been apportioned MVR 101 million (USD 6,534,081.88) worth of funds this year while the State had exceeded the allocated budget by fivefold on compensation payments last year. A total of MVR 101 million was assigned for the compensation budget last year as well however, the budget was exhausted beyond its reserve with a total expenditure of MVR 557 million (USD 36,034,491.16) at the end of the year.
The Ministry of Finance had addressed an appeal lodged by Mihaaru News last January requesting details on the parties that were compensated by the State, stating that the names of these people as well as the individually disbursed amounts cannot be divulged. The Ministry maintained the reason for withholding this information as the anonymity policy incorporated while proceeding compensation communications.
Over the course of the last 13 years, the State had expended MVR 2.7 billion (USD 174,673,476) as compensation payments for numerous parties. While 74 percent of this number was disbursed during the preceded 5 years, MVR 2 billion (USD 129,387,760) was expended on compensation amid this time.
The State is required to issue compensation once they annul agreements in violation of laws and regulations. Each year, the dedicated budget for compensation payments is exhausted beyond its allocated amount.
