The government has announced plans to have traditional decorative archways or "gidige'" hoisted in all atoll capitals of Maldives to mark the occasion of Eid-al-Fitr.

Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef announced today that efforts had commenced to transport the materials to atoll capitals, and that teams from STELCO and FENAKA would be helping with the installation of Eid decorations in islands.

Hoisting gidige for Eid celebrations is a traditional Maldivian practice dating back deep into the past, telling of a culture and people with love for gatherings and celebrations. After a long hiatus, Male' City was lit up for celebrations last year, and efforts are underway to have Hulhumale' also decorated for Eid Celebrations this time around.

According to the calendar, this year's Eid-al-Fitr will fall on 10 April.
