An Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) investigation team entered the Badminton Association of the Maldives (BAM) office in connection with allegations of corruption leveled against them.

There were accusations in the past that BAM was engaging in activities to facilitate the business of its owners. It was alleged that the badminton shuttles were being purchased from the shop ‘Askani Sports’ in Male’ City, which is owned by the president of the association, Moosa Nashid.

It was also claimed that the association rented the premises from association leaders’ private residences.

According to the BAM, they purchase the badminton balls from Moosa’s ‘Askani Sports’ shop in accordance with the rules.

The BAM responded to a letter from ‘Mihaaru’, which sought clarification on why they purchased shuttles from Moosa’s shop and inquired about the procedure behind it. The letter, signed by the association’s Vice-President, Ahmed Shakir Moosa, explained that in addition to buying shuttles from Moosa’s shop, they also use shuttles provided by sponsors for tournaments. The letter further disclosed that there were challenges in procuring shuttles, hence, the association has sought advice from relevant authorities on how to address these constraints.

In 2017, ACC stated that there were no issues in purchasing shuttles from Moosa’s shop.

“After investigating the allegation that the BAM were procuring shuttles from Moosa’s shop, ACC’s investigation did not uncover any corrupt practices under the Prevention and Prohibition of Corruption Act”, a statement released by ACC said.
