Construction of Polytechnic building in Thulusdhoo for tourism sector begins

Construction work has begun on a Polytechnic building in Thulusdhoo to serve the needs of the tourism sector

The Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development, in conjunction with Villa Educational Service, laid the foundation stone for a proposed polytechnic building in Kaafu atoll Thulusdhoo yesterday.

The foundation stone was laid by Higher Education Minister Dr. Maryam Mariya and rector of Villa College, Dr. Ahmed Anwar.

During the ceremony, the Minister emphasized that the institute will provide groundbreaking opportunities for the island’s youth. It will allow the youth to hone their skills while staying close to their families in their own island. Additionally, the institute will also assist them in securing jobs with a suitable income.

The current government has initiated a project to establish higher education and training centres across the Maldives. The building in Thulusdhoo will provide technical level courses in water sports and mid-level tourism sectors. The institute will also offer vocational courses in other areas as well.

By the end of the project, the following will be achieved: - Alongside teaching facilities, Polytechnic will provide accommodation services - The institute will offer technical training in tourism - A tourist facility will be developed to provide students with practical experience - The institute will provide classrooms, an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) laboratory, an auditorium and a library - A designated area for administrative services and a staff room will be developed - Meeting and study rooms will be set up along with an area for student services - There will be activity centres where students can participate in sports for their health and well-being - Prayer area, toilets, lifts and first-aid services will be provided

On the basis of a public-private partnership, the construction of the Polytechnic was handed over to Villa Educational Services in 2022.

A total of 32,581 square feet of land was allocated by Thulusdhoo for 50 years in order to build the structure. Furthermore, a total of 1,200 square feet was allocated near the beach of Thulusdhoo for water sports training.
