Hussain Siraj has been elected as the President of the Bar Council.

The post of Bar Council president fell vacant following the sudden demise of the council's President Ismail Visham in January.

Siraj, who ran for the Bar Council's presidency, received 224 votes in the election held to fill the vacancies in the council’s executive committee. His opponent, Mohamed Faisal, received 172 votes.

Siraj is a renowned lawyer who has been representing high-profile civil suits. He is also an advocate for some of the country's largest companies.

Ahmed Shifau, who ran unopposed for a position on the Bar Council's Executive Committee, was elected to the post by an abstention vote, with 248 lawyers voting in favor and 88 voting against him.

A total of 991 lawyers had registered to vote in the elections.
