An association lost MVR 5 million through scams: Police

Police reveals that MVR 5 million has been stolen from an association through scam calls and other deceptive means. While Police assures investigations are ongoing in this case, no arrests have been made as of yet.

Maldives Police Force has declared that investigations are ensuing into the theft of MVR 5 million robbed from an association through fraud and deception.

During a press conference held by the Police, the Chief Inspector of Police, Yoosuf Looth explained that a case was lodged regarding the theft of MVR 5 million from an association's account through fraudulent and deceptive schemes such as scam calls and various other means.

He further elaborated that these stolen funds have coursed through the bank accounts of 40 people and assured that various evidence of the case has been acquired through the inspection of multiple locations.

Chief Inspector Looth revealed that the storage devices, sim cards, as well as the 22 phones seized from the Maafushi Prison have also been taken into their supervision amid the investigation of this case.

No arrests have been made in relation to this case thus far.

Electronic devices and gadgets inclusive of 22 mobile phones, 10 chargers, 10 AirPods/headset, 2 sim cards and mobile phone parts was obtained during the examination of some cells in the Maafushi prison.

Scams have become increasingly frequent in recent months.
