Owners of nine stalls were fined for employing foreigners in ‘Dhathuruveringe Market’ (Travelers Market) without passes.
Male’ City Council’s media official, Aminath Shathufa, said today, that foreigners are prohibited from working in the Travelers Market without a pass and owners acting in violation of this have been warned and fined accordingly.
Shathufa further elaborated that the owner was initially fined MVR 2,000 and if the offence was to be repeated twice, they will be served a red notice along with a fine of MVR 4,000.
Male’ City Council reserves the right to confiscate the stall as a last resort if foreigners are re-employed even after being fined for the second time.
Similar measures were taken in the past for employing foreigners in the Travelers Market against regulations.
The market stalls are given to locals to run businesses. However, some work in conjunction with foreigners, while others are also rented out to foreigners to operate.
