Police have revealed that a total of 54 vehicles have been seized for dangerous driving over the speed limit in Male' City during January and February this year.
At a press conference held to reveal preparations being made for the upcoming month of Ramadan, Male' Area Police Head Chief Superintendent of Police Hussain Sameer said that 54 vehicles were seized for a period of 30 days due to dangerous driving beyond speed limits and with loud noises.
He explained that these include motorcycles in which the silencers have been modified in such a manner as to make louder noises than is normal when driving.
"We have also seized these motorcycles with modified silencers to make louder noises. Even four wheeled vehicles which are driven in a way that instills fear in people's hearts have also been seized," Sameer said.
Sameer revealed that 450 accidents were reported in the last two months alone.
He stated that the cause of many of these accidents is either illegal overtaking, zigzag riding of motorcycles, driving on the wrong lane, going over the speed limit, zooming past at tremendous speeds and startling drivers.
Sameer also said that illegal parking causes vehicles turning into streets to not see them and result in causing accidents.
In these two months, the number of accidents in Hulhumale' is at approximately 150.
Police appeals to the public to extend cooperation to efforts to decrease road accidents through abiding by the traffic laws set in place.
