Nearly 1,000 food establishments inspected, action to be taken against unhygienic ones

HPA said that the inspection was conducted to ensure that the food establishments adhere to the set hygiene standards and to familiarize food service providers with these standards.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has reported that a total of 993 cafe's and restaurants were inspected in the Greater Male' Region to determine compliance with HPA standards.

The inspection was carried out by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), Male' City Council, Housing Development Corporation (HDC), and Hulhumale' Hospital from February 18 to March 2 in food establishments located across Male', Hulhumale', Hulhule, Vilimale', Thilafushi, Gulhifalhu, and CROSSROADS.

HPA said that the inspection was conducted to ensure that the food establishments adhere to the set hygiene standards and to familiarize food service providers with these standards.

Details of locations inspected

- Hulhumale': 308 locations

- Thilafushi: 9 locations

- Vilimale': 19

- Male': 597 locations

- Gulhi Falhu: 2 locations

- CROSSROADS: 15 locations

- Hulhumale' Airport: 43 locations

HPA will work closely with the relevant authorities to investigate issues that surfaced during the inspection. Action will also be taken against those who do not meet food hygiene standards, they said.

In a statement released by Male' City Council, which participated in the inspection, it was revealed that a significant number of unhygienic establishments were identified. Furthermore, the City Council added that foreigners operating food establishments without obtaining permission were discovered, and appropriate actions will be taken against them.

The council has shared some videos taken during the inspection, showing food being stored and sold in unhygienic locations which can potentially be a health risk.
