Will build MNDF capacity to surveil borders 24/7 next month: President

"Work is proceeding at speed to ensure that our large Exclusive Economic Zone is kept under surveillance without interruption through out the 24 hours of each day. God willing, we will commence that, too, within the next month," the President said.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that Maldives National Defence Force will be strengthened through capacity building within the month of March to a level where they can conduct border patrols around the clock, every day.

Speaking in Noonu atoll Manadhoo yesterday, the President said that until the present time, the security forces had never held the capacity to conduct complete surveillance of the 900,000 sqkm ocean territory of the country.

"However, work is proceeding at speed to ensure that our large Exclusive Economic Zone is kept under surveillance without interruption through out the 24 hours of each day. God willing, we will commence that, too, within the next month," the President said.

"So now we will not have to ask another people to help us with this. We will do medical evacuations on our own, we will conduct border patrols on our own," the President asserted.

Government has not yet released any details regarding the capacity building efforts being undertaken by MNDF to achieve this major goal.

The President further announced that the coming Friday would see the launching of the National Air Ambulance services by the government.

A Dash 8 flight and a seaplane from Maldivian Airlines has been repurposed for use in this service.
