President Dr Muizzu states that the development of hospitals in seven island including Hanimaadhoo was halted due to neglect by former govt resulting in withdrawal of funds by Kuwait Fund and assured to find a solution to recommence these projects.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated yesterday that the former government had failed to commence the establishment of hospitals in seven islands, inclusive of Haa Dhaalu Atoll Hanimaadhoo, as determined under project agreements, as a result of which the Kuwait Fund had withdrawn some funds they had extended for said projects.
The agreement to construct hospitals consisting of 30 beds in seven islands with the aid of Kuwait Fund was signed in May last year during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration.
The project of establishing hospitals within Haa Dhaalu Atoll Hanimaadhoo, Alif Dhaalu Atoll Maamigili, Vaavu Atoll Felidhoo and Thaa Atoll Vilufushi was appointed to the Maldivian construction company, Duplex Private Limited, while the development of hospitals in Shaviyani Atoll Milandhoo, Noonu Atoll Velidhoo and Kaafu Atoll Thulusdhoo was contracted to Anand Buildtech Private Limited.
Speaking at a ceremony held in Hanimaadhoo during his trip across four northern atolls in the country, President Muizzu stated that the council had informed him of the halted construction of hospitals in four islands, inclusive of Hanimaadhoo.
“Kuwait Fund had at last withdrawn the funds due to the former government not utilizing the funds and the prolonged delay in commencing the projects during the former administration,” said President Muizzu.
“Matters can only worsen to such an extent.”
The president acclaimed that this was believed to occur due to neglect and failure in complying with the implementation policies as well and that the withdrawal of these funds had halted the development of these projects in these islands.
Health Ministry had previously stated that a sum of MVR 686 million has been granted from the Kuwait Fund to conduct the construction of these hospitals.
The president assured on Monday that this government will ensure that these projects proceed after finding alternate solutions to the issue. He pledged to establish a standard hospital suitable to cater to the island’s population, further highlighting that improvements required for the existing hospital in Hanimaadhoo will be identified and implemented until the facilitation of this new hospital.
