Airports to be built as it is key for development, not to please people: President

"I am making these pledges believing that this is something that needs to be done. I am not making any pledges just to keep the public happy during campaign days," President Dr Muizzu assured.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that he is pledging to build several airports not with the intention of superficially pleasing people, but rather because it is key for development.

Speaking in Haa Alif Atoll Dhihdhoo this morning, the President responded to opposition's criticism regarding his numerous recent pledges to build airports in several locations in the country.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had pledged to build domestic and international airports in many islands even during the presidential campaigns last year. During his first trips to the atolls after assuming office, he is reasserting his pledges and revealing more detailed plans for the establishment of such airports.

A number of MoUs have also been recently signed regarding the construction of airports. This includes international airports in Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo and Gaafu Alif Villin'gili.

"Due to the geographical distribution of the Maldives, the distribution of the Maldives' population, when we are aiming to develop the country, the people do not want Maldives to remain as it has in the past. Establishing airports is a vital need now. International airports in some places, domestic airports in some places, hence we must construct airports," the President said.

"I am making these pledges believing that this is something that needs to be done. I am not making any pledges just to keep the public happy during campaign days," President Dr Muizzu assured.

The president assured the people of Dhihdhoo today that he would fulfill his campaign pledge to build an airport on that island as well.

"Work on that airport will be commenced within this island's land reclamation project," he declared.

The most pressing concern of Dhihdhoo residents is the lack of adequate services from the island's hospital. Addressing this, the President said that in order to strengthen the Haa Alif Atoll health system, a new, modern, high quality hospital will be constructed on the island.
