Due to a prolonged period of time passing since its submission, the case proposed by MP Hussain Shaheem against former president Mohamed Nasheed in 2022, the committee decided to confirm if he wishes to proceed with the case.
The Committee has stated that the case proposed by the South Henveiru Constituency member, Hussain Shaheem (Andhun Hussain) in appeal to take action against the former president and parliament speaker at the time, Mohamed Nasheed be sent back for Shahemm to reconsider and decide whether he wants to continue.
The case was submitted in response to Nasheed's insinuations against Hussain of complying with the government in covering up the truth behind the assassination attempt on Nasheed executed through a bomb attack.
This case was submitted to the Parliament Committee on Members' Privileges and Ethics on May 15, 2022.
During the meeting that was held today to deliberate the actions for unfinished cases of the Ethics Committee, Chairman of the Committee and Parliamentarian of the Makunudhoo Constituency, Mohamed Raai had highlighted that the case has not progressed till present and requested the members to finalize a course of conduct for the case.
However, the majority of the committee is held by Hussain and Raai’s political party, Maldives Democratic Party (MDP).
Addressing this, Gan Constituency parliamentarian, Mohamed Wisam stated that due to the passing of an extended period of time following the submission of the case, the situation has now become different. His proposal to the Committee was to verify with the member who proposed the case whether he wishes to proceed.
The Committee passed this proposal and determined to schedule the case agenda for another day if confirmed to proceed.
Relative to the attack on May 6, Nasheed had declared that Hussein had 'spilled blood'. He made these allegations in a WhatsApp group chat made together with the parliamentarians and some administrative staff of the parliament. Hussein had requested copies of the messages sent by Nasheed to the WhatsApp group chat that day.
Some other cases that were submitted to the committee were decided to be filed during today’s meeting. One of these cases was the vandalism of the office entrance reserved for the Jumhooree Party parliamentarians wherein the words “Solih Party” and “MMP” (Maldives Military Party) was written.
This case, which surfaced two years back on July 7, 2021, was decided to be dismissed due to its inability to proceed once the Defense Ministry delivered a notice informing that the CCTV footage of the day was missing.
