President Dr Muizzu asserted that no one in the current administration would do anything to obstruct the provision of justice for Yameen. He said the case lies in the courts, and his administration would not influence the courts in any way.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated today that former President Abdulla Yameen, who is currently serving an 11 year prison service for money laundering and bribery, deserves justice. He asserted that no one in the current administration would do anything to obstruct the provision of justice for Yameen.
Speaking to residents of Feydhoo at a gathering held last night, President Dr Muizzu assured that neither him nor his government would exert any influence onto a case ongoing in a court of justice. He reiterated that the judiciary is an independent body and is free of influence or interference.
"I have said even before that I will not exert influence on a court trial. The judiciary is working with complete autonomy. No minister, no company leader, no MP, no one from the government will influence the courts," he reiterated.
The President once again repeated that the country can only move forward once the culture of taking revenge is eradicated, and assured that he is not a leader who would resort to arresting political leaders or having them placed in detention. He expressed his opinion that in order for the country to achieve such peace, Yameen needs to receive justice.
"I pledged that causing harm or being vindictive for political reasons is something I would never do. I have always maintained that justice is something that everyone deserves," the President said.
President Dr Muizzu stated that justice delayed is justice denied, and said that the delays in the former President receiving justice is one reason for discontentment amongst the people.
"He also must receive justice through the judiciary. That will be the most just cause of action even for the nation as a whole," the President said.
On the day after President Dr Muizzu won the presidential election, former President Yameen was transferred to house arrest as a response to a direct request from him, who was then the President Elect.
However, supporters of Yameen are voicing harsh criticism against President Muizzu now as the former President continues to remain in under detention, albeit under house arrest.
As a response, President Dr Muizzu, his cabinet and supporters have always maintained that the government will, under no circumstances, interfere with the judiciary.
