Ooredoo commences work to establish Peace Cable in Maldives

In commencement of the work, the company has taken the Peace Cable to Kulhudhuhfushi City yesterday and connected it to the Ooredoo landing site set up in the location.

Ooredoo has begun on Saturday the physical work in the establishment of the international Peace Cable in the Maldives.

In commencement of the work, the company has taken the Peace Cable to Kulhudhuhfushi City yesterday and connected it to the Ooredoo landing site set up in the location.

This marks the first instance where a international submarine cable has been connected in Maldives besides in Hulhumale'.

Kulhudhuhfushi City Mayor Mohamed Athif spoke of the city's residents' excitement about the project and the advancements it would bring to their community.

"Our hope is that Kulhudhuhfushi City becomes a main digital hub, and brings new advancement to our community and Maldivian citizens around the country," Mayor Athif said.

Ooredoo estimates that this system will be fully functional by the third quarter of 2024.

Guest of Honour at the inauguration ceremony of the Peace Cable set up was Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef.

Speaking at the event, Minister Shareef extended thanks to to Ooredoo for their numerous efforts in the line of introducing innovative services and technological advancements to the Maldives within a competitive market.

"It is a great honour to Kulhudhuhfushi City, as well as the Maldives as as whole, to have Peace Cable - connecting Singapore and Europe - set up here in the city. I am certain that this will bring many benefits to the community, as well as open many doors and opportunities," the Minister said.

Ooredoo has taken the Peace Cable to Kulhudhuhfushi to commence work on set up.

Through the Peace Cable, Maldives will be connected to Singapore, Europe, as well as Africa. Ooredoo stated that it made the decision to invest in the cable with the aim of improving internet service latency and to expand capacity.

"From today, with the beginning of the practical work on the Peace cable, Kulhudhuhfushi has become the first island outside of Greater Male' Region where a main landing of a submarine cable has been placed. With this, further development will be brought to Kuludhuhfushi and the entire Maldives, and Ooredoo services will also be made even better. In addition to this, Kulhudhuhfushi City will be included in the world's submarine cable maps," Ooredoo's Chief Commercial Officer Hussain Niyaz said.

PEACE Cable stands for 'Pakistan and East Africa Connecting Europe', and is a submarine cable project designed to facilitate data transmission between Asia, Europe, and Africa. The cable became fully operational in December 2022.
