HRCM released a statement stating that it has received a case submission claiming that ACC's investigation into the allocation of flats is impinging on the rights of multiple individuals, and hence has commenced its own investigation into the matter.
Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has also started investigations into the allocation of flats under the previous administration's Gedhoruveriya housing scheme.
Earlier, the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) has concluded its investigation into the matter and announced that it has found 60 percent of recipients included in the list to be, in fact, ineligible to receive flats.
Announcement of ACC's findings led to widespread concerns amongst the public.
While this is so, HRCM released a statement on Sunday stating that it has received a case submission claiming that ACC's investigation into the allocation of flats is impinging on the rights of multiple individuals.
HRCM stated that it will be investigating the matter through a purely human rights centered perspective.
The commission said they have held meetings with the Housing Ministry, who confirmed that they do not intend to cancel the earlier flat recipient list in full.
The commission further related that the Ministry had informed them that they are awaiting legal advice from the Attorney General regarding the findings submitted by the ACC.
HRCM assured that they would expedite investigations into the case as the matter is highly sensitive and concerning to a large number of people.
