The apparent temperature, or heat index, in the northern and central parts of the nation has crossed the 40 degrees celsius mark.

Data released by the Meteorological Office stated that Hulhumalé experienced a temperature of 40.4 degrees celsius at 14:00 hrs, while Hanimaadhoo recorded a 40.3 degrees celsius.

The apparent temperature (temperature that the human percieves) depends on the ambient temperature (as can be obtained through instruments) of an area together with the wind and humidity.

The ambient temperature in most parts of the country today hovered around 25-39 degrees celsius

The onset of the monsoon season between January to June is usually the hottest period in the country, usually peaking in April.

During last year's hottest period, the maximum apparent temperature felt in the capital region was 45 degrees celsius.

Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at isolated places in the southern part of the state today. However, the weather is likely to be fair in other parts of the country, the office said.

Strong winds are likely to prevail over central and northern atolls and rough seas, the Met office said.
