Male' City Mayor Adam Azim has revealed that there are no records and no documentation at the council offices relating to the housing project the council previously announced for residents of SinaMale' and Male Hiya' flats.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony for the Mayor Azim, former Mayor, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, declared that the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) majority holding council had undertaken efforts to rebuild revamped housing units in the SinaMale' flat location.
He said that despite those efforts, they had been unable to undertake those efforts due to being unable to get the required permissions at the time.
The President said at the time that despite this, the PPM/PNC administration will ensure that new housing complexes are built at the locations of Male' Hiya and Sinamale', relocating the residents for the construction duration to other temporary flats which would be built commencing in April.
Asked about this initiative, Mayor Azim revealed that no documentation relating to the project has been seen at the Male' City Council offices. Hence, he is unaware of any details regarding the project, the planned location or any practical work that may have been conducted for it.
Meanwhile, Housing Ministry stated that the reconstruction of the Sinamale' and Male' Hiya flats is a project undertaken by the council, and that any information regarding the project should be sought from them.
In his speech earlier, President Dr Muizzu stated that once the new apartment complexes are built, designated for residents of SinaMale' 1, 2, 3, as well as Male' Hiyaa 1 and 2, the residents will receive more spacious and better built flats.
In May 2023, the Male' City Council had announced a decision to commence seeking investors for the project, the decision being endorsed unanimously by all 12 council members at the time.
