State media PSM will be hosting the Parliamentary Election debates featuring candidates running for all 93 constituencies included in the elections slated to be held on March 17.

A senior official of PSM told Mihaaru News that the debates will commence on February 20. They plan to air five debates within each day so as to ensure all constituencies are covered a couple of days ahead of the beginning of Ramadan. The debates will be aired on PSM's channel YesTV.

"Debates will be held in the cities themselves in the case of constituencies with city councils. Hence, debates of constituencies in Male', Kulhudhuhfushi, Fuvahmulah and Addu will be held in those cities," the official explained.

The debates will commence with the Male' area constituencies. After this, all other constituencies will be covered in geographical order beginning from Haa Alif Atoll on towards Addu Atoll.

The state media is planning on holding the debates at the auditorium of the Maldives National University.

Marking a difference from previous debates, PPM has decided to base questions to candidates on public suggestions this time. The most appropriate questions will be selected from amongst all submissions by the public before posing them to candidates.

Elections Commission announced on last Tuesday that applications are now open for candidates wishing to contend in the parliamentary elections. The deadline for applications is February 14. Candidacy forms can be submitted between 09:00 hrs and 14:00 hrs every day except Fridays. Applications are also accepted on Fridays, but the time window is between 14:00 hrs and 16:00 hrs.
