The Parliament has stated that the Central Mahchangoalhi Constituency MP, former parliament Speaker, and former President Mohamed Nasheed had relocated abroad without informing the parliament of how to proceed regarding his responsibilities towards his constituency and the public as part of the legislative.

He had relocated to Ghana after the announcement that he has taken a hiatus from politics. Nasheed has made this move to assume the role of Secretary-General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF), with Ghana currently presiding over the organization.

After arriving in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, yesterday, he posted a status on X, saying the city will be his home for the next couple of years.

Speaking to Mihaaru News, Parliament’s Communication Director Hassan Ziyau said that Nasheed has not instructed the parliament on any due proceedings. He said that the former president had not requested a vacation from his remaining tenure at the Parliament. Therefore, Nasheed will continue to receive his salary and benefits as a Parliamentarian.

He will also be receiving allowances for having served a presidential term in the country.

Nasheed had distanced himself from politics following the coalition MDP (Maldives Democratic Party)’s attempts at dismissing him from his position as Parliament Speaker through a no confidence vote after he had resigned from MDP and founded a new party, The Democrats. He had resigned from his position while the parliament had prepared all necessary proceedings to take the vote.

Following his resignation, Nasheed had partook in very few Parliamentary meetings. The Parliament’s attendance report reveals that he had not requested for a day off or sick leave during these days. After taking a hiatus from politics, he had resided in United Kingdom and Sri Lanka. His last visit to the Maldives was for supporting Democrats candidate Saif Fathih before the mayoral elections in Malé.

Failing to attend a parliamentary meeting and taking sick leaves without prior notification was an action he had highly condemned during his tenure as the Parliament Speaker. During his time as Speaker, he also executed a practice of announcing the names of the absent members.

In the last statement he had released, Nasheed expressed that he had diligently served the public during his time as President and Speaker of the parliament. He highlighted his efforts as President in establishing a social security system and a tax structure for the Maldivian people.

In the statement, he had remarked his confidence in having executed both tasks to the best of his capabilities. He conveyed his disappointment that the hope for governmental accountability and the ambition to eradicate corruption among the country's leaders had not materialized as hoped.

"It is my hope that the next generation of people will do the job of making the government and leaders accountable," he said.
