Male' City Council is working to expedite the completion of repair and renovation of the Aa Sahara cemetery, with the newest estimated time of completion slated to be prior to the start of Ramadan
Male' City Council has stated that the construction of the funeral attendees lounge at the Aa Sahara cemetery is estimated to be completed by Ramadan.
The council's Media Official Aminath Shathufa said that Mayor Adam Azim has recently met with the contractor handling the project and urged the work be expedited.
Based on discussions at this meeting, it is believed that the work will reach completion by Ramadan this year, falling on March 11 as per the calendar.
The project, which involves increasing space for funeral attendees to stay in, was commenced in June 2023. Under the new plan, a two storey building is being constructed to address the issue of space constraints.
The project is estimated to cost MVR 4.9 million and was initially given to a private company called PNP Maldives.
In November last year, a council staff said that an advance of 15 percent of the total and MVR 2.6 million for work was issued to the company before their agreement was terminated. This amounts to 53 percent of the total funds slated for the project.
After the project was handed over, several changes were brought to the plan. When terminated, 76 percent of the initial plan was completed. However, with the later changes to the plan, the completed work amounts to only 45 percent.
