Gaaf Dhaalu Atoll Gadhdhoo Council has said that the 800 kilowatts Generator that Fenaka Corporation has attempted to transfer to Gnaviyani Fuvahmulah was brought to the island to resolve an electricity problem and has remained uninstalled till today. They stated that the generator cannot be transferred to another island without solving Gadhdhoo’s electricity problem.

In a resolution passed to address this matter by the Gadhdhoo Island Council, it was stated that of the 3 gensets currently in use in the island, the 400-kilowatt generator faces overheating issues that has not been resolved even after two maintenances. They also disclosed the issue of the under-floor oil leakage in an 800-kilowatt genset and said that should any of these generators cease to function for any reasons, the island will have an electricity shortage on their hands.

According to the council, the only remaining generator set in the island that is in good condition is the 600-kilowatt generator set.

The council said the Gadhdhoo Fenaka branch’s request to install the 800 kilowatt generator set during the conclusion of the previous government’s tenure has remained unanswered.

“If this generator is not installed and the electricity situation has not seen improvement by the time Ramadan approaches, the residents may face many difficulties,” the resolution states.

Hence, they have called to immediately cease the attempts to remove the generator from the island.

Fenaka said that efforts to transfer the genset has been ongoing since last month and that this was because the Generator is not in use and the island isn’t presently facing any electricity issues.

Gadhdhoo council had released a statement yesterday as well, calling to cease the efforts for removal, as well as a request for a permit to install the generator. They stated that concerns are underway on whether the residents of the island may experience electricity shortage during Ramadan and yet they had not received a response on their request for installation.

The council acknowledged that the transfer of the generator is temporary and will to be returned once Fuvahmulah acquires an 800-kilowatt generator, however, highlighting the state of the island and the unfinished works, the council said that the people has lost faith in the company. They said that in addition to the spare for plant operation due to the damage to the Fenaka RO water plant still not been acquired, residents don’t receive 24-hour water supply and the forms submitted in request for services has been piled up without being completed.

They stated that due to many such reasons, they no longer have faith in the Fenaka Corporation.

Managing Director of Fenaka, Mohamed Muaz Rasheed said in a statement given to Mihaaru that efforts are still underway to find a way to transfer the generator to Fuvahmulah City after negotiating with the people of Gadhdhoo.
