Dunya and Anara face defeat in PPM/PNC primaries

Former Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon and former MP for Makunudhoo constituency Anara Naeem have both faced defeat in Saturday's ruling coalition parliamentary primaries.

Former Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon and former MP for Makunudhoo constituency Anara Naeem have both faced defeat in Saturday's ruling coalition parliamentary primaries.

In the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PPM) parliamentary primaries held yesterday, Dunya contested for the Hulhumale' South constituency, and Anara contested for Huraa constituency.

The constituency Dunya contested in was won by Shaneez Hashim (Shanko) with 240 votes to Dunya's 70.

The other candidate contesting in the same constituency also received 102 votes.

Dunya has lost this primary, which is the first election she has competed in.

Anara Naeem lost the ticket to Abdulla Varish. Despite contesting, she was unable to win a seat in the last held parliamentary election as well.

Anara's husband, Adam Shafeeq, went on to win the ticket for the Makunudhoo constituency.

Also unable to win the primaries was Ibrahim Waheed (Lawyer Waddey). The Thulusdhoo constituency was won again by their current MP and recently joined member of PNC Ibrahim Naseem.

Former MP for Ihavandhoo constituency, Mohamed Abdulla (Mohamma) also faced defeat in the primaries. The constituency ticket was won by Ahmed Naseer.

Kulhudhuhfushi constituency's ticket went to their city council member Mohamed Daud.

Dhaandhoo constituency was won by Mohamed Fazeel, who defeated the 18th Parliament's MP for the area, Assadh Shareef.

As per provisional results, it appears that Ahmed Nazim, who has previously served as Deputy Speaker of Parliament, will win the Dhiggaru constituency ticket.

Inguraidhoo constituency was won by MP for the area in the 18th Parliament Ibrahim Falah.

Abdul Latheef Mohamed went on to confirm the ticket for the constituency which he represents, Dhihdhoo.

Thinadhoo constituency ticket went to their previous MP Saudhulla Hilmy, with Milandhoo ticket guaranteed to their former MP Hassan Mufeed.

Maafannu South constituency ticket went to former MP Ibrahim Rifau (Bochey) and Maafannu Central to Asma Rasheed.

Former Hoarafushi constituency MP Mohamed Ismail this time contested for and won the ticket of Villimale' constituency.

Henveiru North constituency ticket went to Male' City Council Member Ahmed Aifan.

As per PPM, 283 candidates participated in the primaries for 73 constituencies. The total number of eligible voters for this primary rests at 71,597.
