The Election Commission (EC) has announced that they are seeking to establish 40 polling stations by setting up tents in two Malé City locations for the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled on March 17.
The Elections Commission (EC) announced on Wednesday that it is seeking a party to establish 40 polling stations by installing tents at two areas in Malé City for the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for March 17.
According to the EC's announcement, interested parties can submit their bids until February 4, with the bidding scheduled to commence on the same day.
This time, the parliamentary elections will take place during the first week of Ramadan. The EC had previously said it was difficult to secure school halls to set up election centers due to the elections coinciding with school exams.
During the 2021 local council elections, polling stations in Malé city were established using tents amid the Covid-19 pandemic. For the upcoming parliamentary elections, the EC plans to set up polling stations at Galolhu Stadium, Dharumavantha School's old building, and Maafannu Stadium by erecting tents.
Some political parties have requested to hold the elections after the month of Ramadan. As the elections can only be postponed by amending the Elections Act, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has filed an amendment to the parliament.
