The first extraordinary sitting of the parliament in 2024 has been scheduled for Sunday, January 28.
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats have requested the Parliament Secretariat to convene an extraordinary sitting to amend the General Elections Act to disallow elections during the month of Ramadan, and to decide on granting parliamentary approval to the cabinet.
The parties requested the extraordinary session to take place before the commencement of the last session of the 19th People's Majlis, scheduled to begin on February 5.
The agenda for the extraordinary sitting includes bills related to the amendment of the General Elections Act and the Maldivian Land Act. Additionally, referral of three ministries with changed mandates to the Standing Committee for consideration and parliamentary approval of the cabinet has also been placed on the agenda.
An amendment to the General Elections Act has been proposed in response to the parliamentary elections being scheduled during Ramadan. The Elections Commission (EC) has announced that the parliamentary elections will take place on March 17, right after the first week of Ramadan.
