Ministry of Islamic Affairs has signed an agreement with SJ Construction for the construction of Zikura Mosque.

The contract is to build a three storey building to be used as the mosque, at the same location where the old building of that mosque is located now.

The agreement was signed by Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed and SJ Company Director Shihad Ibrahim at a special ceremony held this morning.

SJ Construction will be bearing all costs of the project.

The Ministry also signed contracts for building two mosques in Hulhumale'. These are also going to be funded by the respective contractors.

These contracts were signed with Aleem Foundation and Lisa Maldives.

The Minister said that it is not ideal to have a temporary mosque in a highly populated location in Male' City, and added that he believed the work on that mosque will also be completed in the near future.

Minister lauded the initiative to build mosques on the contractors' own funding, describing it as a pious act. He noted that except for Furqan Mosque, all mosques in Male' City have been funded by private entities or individuals.

SJ Construction was also previously contracted to build a ten storey building at the location of the Zikura Mosque, inclusive of a mosque and an office complex.

Their contract was cancelled during the past administration, following which the company sued for damages. The State, too, filed a case seeking the MVR 30 million provided as acquisition to the company.

An out of court settlement was reached and SJ Construction built a temporary mosque at the location of Zikura Mosque.
