Fenaka Corporation Maldives’ Managing Director, Mohamed Muaz Rasheed, said that the decision not to renew the contract of employees hired by the Haa Alif Atoll Dhihdhoo branch for special projects was due to the halting of the new engine construction project.

As a result of the termination of staff employed for the construction of the new engine in Dhihdhoo without a contract renewal, more than 50 of the affected employees started a protest today.

In a post on social media X addressing the matter, Muaz stated that 70 employees were hired on contract and that more than MVR 23 million has been expended on their behalf.

He also clarified that the corporation’s decision not to renew the employees’ contracts was due to the project being currently halted.

Meanwhile, the protesters have said that this decision was disclosed to them only after they presented themselves to work this morning. They also said that some of the terminated employees were fired before the period in their contract had expired.

Fenaka has previously stated that the company is facing extreme financial distress, with a possible risk of bankruptcy, due to the numerous contract basis staff hired during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Additionally, the current Fenaka management has stated that the company also had to suffer severe financial repercussions due to the granting of jobs beyond the company's requirement during the run up to last year's presidential election.
