Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has alleged that if ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) coalition win a majority in the upcoming parliamentary elections, the flat recipients list compiled under his administration's 'Gedhoruveriya' housing scheme would be entirely disregarded.
Speaking at a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) rally held in Hulhumale' last night, Solih said that it is 'a fact beyond doubt' that if MDP did not hold majority in the current parliament, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu would already have distributed the flats to a list of his own making.
"Otherwise, there is no reason to not have completed this as three, four months have passed by. This was done with absolute transparency. What did he say at first? That if anyone has received a government document saying they will receive flats, then have no doubt, they will be given flats. And yet, that changed in less than a week," Solih said.
Solih said that two weeks since this statement, ACC had issued its findings, upon which, the Ministry made a committee to review the matter. Since then, he said, 'President Muizzu's Committee' has been established, adding that the intention behind this is to delay issuing flats in the hopes that it may assist in them winning majority in parliament.
"If they get majority, for sure they will disregard [the list]. So, in order to stop all this, we must stand for the rights of the citizens. MDP will also back what is most beneficial to the people. We have no other intentions," he said.
Meanwhile, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has also responded last night to Solih's claims at a previous rally, saying 'having been President for five years is not a license to lie to the people'.
