President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appealed to the residents of Male' to elect candidates aligned with the views of the government so as to ensure the island's development.
The People's National Congress candidate for tomorrow's mayoral by-election is Azima Shakoor. Additionally, party representatives are running for the other three council seats that have been vacated.
In a video message published today by the party, President Dr Muizzu states that many endeavours which did not receive government backing during his tenure as mayor has now been commenced.
According to him, this includes development of Male' roads, housing projects and well as establishment of parking buildings. The President said that the city council has now been given the opportunity to proceed with these projects.
The President warned that if an opposition candidate is elected as Mayor and mandated with continuing these projects, Male' residents may have to 'relive bitter days like that of the past' once again.
President Dr Muizzu said that he believes the people will not take such a risk during tomorrow's election and said he hoped the people would elect a mayor whose views align with those of the government and who would work as an intermediary between the government and the people in order to implement the government's policies.
The Male' mayoral elections are scheduled to be held tomorrow (January 13, Saturday) with five competing candidates.
